According to the Sheffield Star, Steven Fletcher hasn’t ‘received a formal offer elsewhere’ and could stay at Sheffield Wednesday this summer.
The 33-year-old has an uncertain future at Hillsborough as his deal is up in the coming months and there’s been no progress made on a contract extension, but Sheffield Star say Wednesday have no any suitors to contend with, so Fletcher isn’t going anywhere.
There could be an exodus of strikers at Wednesday this summer, with Connor Wickham only on loan while Fraser Preston, Jack Stobbs, Sam Winnall, Atdhe Nuhiu and Fernando Forestieri are out of contract.
Garry Monk could be left with only Jordan Rhodes next season, so the Owls are desperate to tie down Fletcher. He’s made 135 appearances in all competitions since joining from Sunderland in 2016, scoring 38 goals and making nine assists.
This season, the 33-year-old has notched 13 goals and two assists in 26 Championship games. As per WhoScored, Fletcher has scored more than Wickham (0), Preston (0), Stobbs (0), Winnall (1), Nuhiu (3), Forestieri (2) and Jordan Rhodes (3) combined, so his departure would be catastrophic.
Wednesday have eight players out of contract this summer, but the Owls have been focused on tying Fletcher down. Assistant manager Lee Bullen said on Wednesday that he’s confident of agreeing terms with the centre-forward, so a deal should get over the line.
