Opinion: Sheff Wed should consider move for 19 y/o Tottenham man to replace Jacob Murphy

|

With Jacob Murphy’s loan spell coming to an end this summer, Adam Reach struggling for consistency this season and Fernando Forestieri being out of contract in the coming months, Sheffield Wednesday will need to bring in at least one winger.

The Owls’ lack of a transfer budget means they’ll have to shop for loans and free transfers this summer. And given Wednesday have preferred domestic-based players to ones overseas, Tottenham Hotspur winger Jack Clarke may be the ideal signing.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

The 19-year-old has yet to make an appearance for Tottenham since his move from Leeds United last summer. Clarke was sent back to Leeds, but the loan was cut short as he was struggling for playing time. Queens Park Rangers came knocking in January 2020 and he’s gone on to make five appearances for the Hoops.

While far from the finished article, Wednesday shouldn’t discount Clarke for his disappointing campaign as he does have qualities that could benefit the Owls. Last season, the England U20 international had a hand in four goals in four Championship starts at Leeds and made a total of 24 league appearances that campaign, as per WhoScored.

He averaged a successful dribble every 30 minutes, made 13 tackles, created a chance every 48 minutes, won 11 free-kicks, whipped in a cross every 29 minutes, completed 75.9% of his passes and had a shot every 45 minutes.

Whether Clarke would be a regular at Hillsborough remains to be seen, but he’s more than good enough to get in their matchday squad. It’s unknown whether Garry Monk is considering a move, however.
