Opinion: What Sheff Wed’s interest in 19 y/o and 21 y/o says of their finances – it’s bad news

|

Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with moves for Manchester United midfielder James Garner and West Ham United winger Nathan Holland this summer.

Garner may offset the potential loss of Sam Hutchinson, Kieran Lee or Joey Pelupessy while Holland could replace on-loan wide-man Jacob Murphy next season.

Vital Sheff Wed have explained that a lack of finances are forcing Garry Monk to shop in the bargain bucket, but the Owls’ interest in Premier League youngsters may also suggest they’re thinking of the wage bill too.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Dejphon Chansiri is looking to make amends for Wednesday’s past overspending by offloading high-earners, making money through the sale of deadwood and replacing players with loans and free transfers.

Garner and Holland aren’t first-team players at their respective clubs, so their salaries will reflect that. Wednesday will be more receptive to paying for lower-wage players this summer, so experienced loanees may be overlooked.

Vital Sheff Wed have spoken about Jack Colback being an option in midfield and Sammy Ameobi being an option on the wing, but the two players will be on a lot more money than Garner and Holland.

Wednesday will need to be shrewd in the transfer market but it’s not good news for their promotion hopes next season if they’re having to sign low-wage players as well as bargain buys.
