Report: Sheffield Wednesday ‘rejected an offer’ from Wigan Athletic for 29-year-old

According to Dom Howson of the Sheffield Star, Sheffield Wednesday ‘rejected an offer’ from Wigan Athletic for Jordan Rhodes earlier in January. The Latics wanted the 29-year-old on loan until the end of the season but were rebuffed in their efforts and may not return for him this month.

Garry Monk has been without Fernando Forestieri for many weeks and recently lost Steven Fletcher to injury too, so he’s unlikely to let a striker leave unless one is brought in. The Owls are closing in Connor Wickham from Crystal Palace, but it would be foolish to offload a player before his replacement is confirmed.

As things stand, the Wednesday manager has Rhodes, Atdhe Nuhiu and Sam Winnall at his disposal. Monk would be down to the bare bones in attack if he accepted Wigan’s offer. Rhodes has featured more regularly in recent weeks too, playing in seven of Wednesday’s last eight Championship outings (401 minutes), so it’s hard to see him leaving now.

The 29-year-old’s contract expires in July and Wednesday will take a £10m hit if he leaves on a free transfer this summer, but Monk may only entertain bids that allow the club to make some money back. A loan move benefits nobody.
