Jordan Rhodes has an uncertain future at Sheffield Wednesday. The 29-year-old is out of contract in less than six months and looks unlikely to be handed a new deal given his poor form and lack of playing time this season.

Wednesday paid £10m to sign Rhodes in 2017 and risk losing him for free if they don’t sell him in January. Wigan Athletic and Celtic are interested, but Garry Monk is unlikely to sell the striker in January as he’s been playing in recent weeks and his departure could leave the Owls short on options.

Steven Fletcher is currently sidelined with a knee injury and could be out of action for two months. He’s Wednesday’s top goalscorer this season (12) and has netted more than Rhodes (3), Sam Winnall (1), Atdhe Nuhiu (3) and Fernando Forestieri (1) combined (8).

Forestieri is also out of action due to injury, so Monk would be left with Winnall and Nuhiu if he let Rhode leave this month. A decision may depend on how many attacking reinforcements Wednesday can bring in before the transfer window closes.

The Owls missed out on Eddie Nketiah but they could soon be signing Connor Wickham. Nevertheless, they won’t get close to £10m for Rhodes if they did decide to sell as he’s only scored 13 goals in 68 games in his three years at Hillsborough.
