Sheffield Wednesday’s official website relayed the EFL’s statement from Rick Parry that said Championship clubs are “edging closer” to resuming the season after agreeing a ‘provisional restart date’ – June 20.

The Owls have recently returned to training at Middlewood and are prepping for their first game in nearly three months. Players initially had to work on their conditioning at home, but now they can be put through their paces under the supervision of Garry Monk and his fitness team.

EFL chief Rick Parry said about the announcement: “With Sky Bet Championship Clubs set to return to full-contact training later this week and following Saturday’s Government announcement, we are edging closer towards resuming the 2019/20 EFL season.

“We have therefore today consulted with the Board’s Championship Directors and agreed to fixtures restarting behind closed doors on 20 June.” The decision came after a previous EFL statement said clubs had until June 2 to submit their vote for the season resuming.

Before the season was postponed due to Covid-19, Wednesday were 15th in the Championship with 48 points from 37 games, winning just two league outings in 2020.

The Owls are only eight points adrift of the playoffs with nine games remaining – Nottingham Forest, Bristol City, West Bromwich Albion, Swansea City, Preston North End, Queens Park Rangers, Huddersfield Town, Fulham and Middlesbrough – but it remains to be seen if they can pull off a dramatic turnaround.

Wednesday were due to face Forest on March 14, so that may be their next fixture when the campaign resumes.
