The EFL say they’re proposing to call a meeting on June 8 to consider a regulation change that would allow the season to be resumed or ended prematurely. Clubs are able to propose amendments to regulations and must submit their proposal by no later than 2pm on June 2.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

EFL said in a statement: “The Board has been consistent in its approach that playing out the remainder of Season 2019/20 when it is safe to do so, is the preferred position.

Sheffield Wednesday have recently returned to training at Middlewood after undergoing specific schedules at home during the lockdown, so the players are being put through their paces in anticipation for the season to resume.

The EFL added: “The Championship have advised of their intentions to resume fixtures, League Two Clubs have indicated their preference to curtail the season. At present, Clubs in League One are still undecided.”

The Premier League returns on June 17, so the Championship season may resume at a similar date if clubs are willing to continue.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic led to the campaign being postponed, Wednesday were 15th in the table with 48 points from 37 games. Garry Monk’s side had won just two league games in 2020 and had the second-fewest points (9) since the turn of the year – Hull City (5).

The Owls are eight points adrift of the playoff places with nine games remaining – Nottingham Forest, Bristol City, West Bromwich Albion, Swansea City, Preston North End, Queens Park Rangers, Huddersfield Town, Fulham and Middlesbrough – so a top-six finish isn’t out of reach.
