“Funds available”, club taking “sensible approach” with recruitment – Sheff Wed’s transfer plan

|

According to Dom Howson of Yorkshire Live, Sheffield Wednesday have “funds available” for new signings but are likely to take a “sensible approach” to recruitment. Vital Wednesday have previously explained why domestic-based loans and free transfers appeal to the Owls, but they also need to be selective.

There could be an exodus at Hillsborough this summer with Morgan Fox, Kieran Lee, Joey Pelupessy, Sam Hutchinson, Sam Winnall, Atdhe Nuhiu, Fernando Forestieri and Steven Fletcher out of contract in the coming months, so Wednesday “will need to be frugal” replacing outgoings if there’s a lot.

Howson said in a Q&A: “I am led to believe there would be some funds available for incomings. Don’t expect Wednesday to go on a big spending spree when the transfer market does reopen. I think they will need to be frugal and adopt a sensible approach to reshaping the squad.”

Fox has a new deal on the table but is yet to put pen to paper. If he leaves, Wednesday will need a new left-back unless Matt Penney takes his place. Lee, Hutchinson and Pelupessy being moved on would leave Garry Monk with a depleted midfield – Barry Bannan, Massimo Luongo, Alex Hunt.

Winnall, Nuhiu and Fletcher’s uncertain futures could lead to Jordan Rhodes being the only striker left in the first-team next season. Wednesday spent less than £1m on 11 arrivals last summer, so they may be hard-pressed replacing the trio adequately.
