According to Dom Howson of Yorkshire Live, Sheffield Wednesday “have held initial talks” with Joey Pelupessy over a new deal but “may go in a different direction”.

The 26-year-old has struggled for form and playing time under Garry Monk this season and is out of contract this summer, so it’s hard to see him staying at Hillsborough for another campaign.

Supporters have been critical of many performances from Pelupessy, and the midfielder has recently admitted that little progress has been made in renewing his deal, so it appears that an exit may be on the cards.

Howson said in a Q&A: “His representatives and the club (may) have held initial talks. Pelupessy wants to stay but the club may decide to go in a different direction.

“And I am sure Pelupessy is not the only out of contract player that has spoken to the club about a new contract.” Pelupessy joined Wednesday from Heracles Almelo in 2018 and has gone on to make 71 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and making three assists.

This season, he’s made 17 appearances across the board but has spent most of the campaign as an unused substitute. Pelupessy has found himself behind Barry Bannan, Kieran Lee, Massimo Luongo and Sam Hutchinson in the pecking order, so it’s no wonder why his future is up in the air.

Lee and Hutchinson are also out of contract, so Monk could be short on midfielders ahead of the new season. It remains to be seen whether this helps Pelupessy, however.
