Sam Winnall could be on his way out of Sheffield Wednesday in the coming months as his contract expires next summer. The 28-year-old admitted to BBC Radio Sheffield that he’s yet to hold talks over an extension too.

When asked if there’s a new deal on the table, Winnall said: “No, not yet. No. Like I say, I think that’s still too far into the future to even think about yet.”

The 28-year-old has spent nearly three years at Hillsborough since joining from Barnsley, scoring and creating six goals in 37 appearances, but his future is uncertain after struggling for form and playing time in the last 18 months.

Winnall fell out of favour just months into his stay at Wednesday. He spent 2017/18 on loan at Derby County, racked up just 208 minutes of football for the Owls in 2018/19 and has amassed 388 minutes of playing time this season.

The Englishman has scored just one goal in the last two years and currently finds himself behind Steven Fletcher, Jordan Rhodes, Atdhe Nuhiu and Fernando Forestieri in the pecking order.

And with Wednesday looking to sign a striker in the January transfer window, it’s hard to see Winnall staying at Hillsborough past 2020.
