Sam Winnall has struggled for form and playing time at Sheffield Wednesday and has an uncertain future ahead of the January transfer window opening.

The 28-year-old has amassed less than 300 minutes of Championship football and finds himself behind Steven Fletcher, Atdhe Nuhiu and Jordan Rhodes in the pecking order, all of whom have more league goals.

Winnall’s contract is also up next summer too, so he has a lot to ponder in January. The out-of-favour centre-forward played down the idea of a loan move away but admitted uncertainty over his long-term future at Hillsborough.

He told BBC Radio Sheffield: “Well, I’ve got six months left on my contract so a loan move’s irrelevant, isn’t it? So that’s out of the question. I don’t know. Whatever happens in January, happens. I’m just trying to focus every day and every game on Sheffield Wednesday and just whatever will be, will be.”

Winnall has made 37 appearances in all competitions since joining Wednesday from Barnsley in January 2017, scoring and creating six goals. After an underwhelming debut season, he was loaned out to Derby County (August 31, 2017 – May 31, 2018) and has made a paltry amount of appearances since.

Monk gave Winnall the nod in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Cardiff City but has only started him in the league on two occasions this season. The 28-year-old even went more than three months without making an appearance for Wednesday (October 2 – December 13) before brought back in from the cold.

And while he’s featured in each of Wednesday’s last four league games, Winnall hasn’t scored since September and should probably be moved on in the coming weeks.
