“Why?”, “Ain’t good enough” – A lot of fans react to Sheff Wed extending 27 y/o’s contract

Sheffield Wednesday confirmed on Thursday that Joey Pelupessy had his contract extended until 2021, but the news hasn’t gone down too well with some supporters.

Pelupessy struggled for form and playing time under Garry Monk and was out of contract this summer, so many dissenting voices from Twitter may have expected him to be a casualty.

Pelupessy joined Wednesday from Heracles Almelo in January 2018 and has gone on to make 71 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and making three assists.

The 27-year-old’s third season at Hillsborough hasn’t gone to plan, however, after falling behind Barry Bannan, Sam Hutchinson, Massimo Luongo and Kieran Lee in the pecking order, so it wouldn’t have been a surprise if he left.

A likely explanation for the Owls keeping Pelupessy may have been the Dutch midfielder having more years ahead of him than the 30-year-old Sam Hutchinson and 31-year-old Kieran Lee while making less of a dent on the wage bill.

If Hutchinson and Lee are released in the coming weeks, Monk would be left with only Bannan, Luongo and the inexperienced Alex Hunt in midfield. Pelupessy at least provides some cover.
