Sheffield Wednesday confirm that Joey Pelupessy has extended his contract until 2021. The 27-year-old’s deal was due to expire at the end of June, but Wednesday have triggered an option to keep him at Hillsborough for one more season.

The Owls’ decision will surprise a lot of supporters as he struggled for form and playing time under Garry Monk this season, but Wednesday could endure a midfield exodus with Kieran Lee and Sam Hutchinson out of contract this summer, so they couldn’t afford to lose Pelupessy too.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

The Dutchman joined the Owls for £450k from Heracles Almelo in January 2018 and has gone on to make 71 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and making three assists.

Pelupessy is coming off the back of a disappointing campaign, however. He’s made only 17/42 appearances this season, amassing 1126/3780 minutes, and hasn’t always performed well when picked by Monk.

But Wednesday could be left with only Barry Bannan and Massimo Luongo next season, so they need squad players as cover. Alex Hunt will be in and around the first-team for that reason too.

Pelupessy is one of the lowest earners in the squad (£0.42m-a-year/£8k-a-week), so it doesn’t make much of a dent to the wage bill by keeping him.
