Fernando Forestieri could be on his way out of Sheffield Wednesday this summer after his agent Lucas Cominelli revealed “there’s been no word from the club” about extending his contract.
The 30-year-old will be a free transfer in less than two weeks unless Wednesday put a new deal on the table. The Owls have to clarify Forestieri’s future before June 24 otherwise he’ll be released, but it doesn’t appear the Italian striker is staying at Hillsborough beyond 2020.
Cominelli told the Sheffield Star: “Fernando has been working hard, he’s ready, he’s available and wants to play if he’s selected. But there’s been no word from the club about anything beyond June 30th when his contract expires, so he will be free on July 1st after the first two games of the restart.”
Forestieri has made 19 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal and making two assists. The 30-year-old has struggled for form (one goal and one assist in 2020), fitness (out of the matchday squad 16 times) and playing time (823 minutes in the Championship) under Garry Monk, so it’s not a surprise that his future is uncertain.
Forestieri earns £1.3m-a-year/£25k-a-week at Wednesday too, so Dejphon Chansiri is making a business decision to trim the wage bill by picking on expendable players – the Italian’s advancing age, poor goal output and injury history will have been factors.
