Garry Monk has confirmed that Josh Windass ‘picked up an injury’ and will miss Sheffield Wednesday’s meeting with Nottingham Forest on Saturday, June 20.

The 26-year-old was believed to have suffered a calf injury which could keep him out of action for three weeks, but Monk says Windass’ thigh is causing him discomfort.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Monk said in a Zoom press conference (h/t Yorkshire Live): “Josh Windass unfortunately picked up an injury last week. We have until the end of the month.

“We are going to try and give him as much time as possible to then assess where his injury is at and how long it will need.

“It is very difficult in the early days to assess how long it will be. It is his thigh that he has had a little bit of a niggle with. It is not massively serious but we have to make a decision on that at the end of the month.”

Windass’ injury could factor in Wednesday’s decision whether or not to keep him for their remaining nine games. The Owls will face Nottingham Forest (June 20), Bristol City (June 28), West Brom (July 1), Swansea City (July 4), and Preston North End (July 7) over the next three weeks, so the on-loan midfielder could potentially miss five matches through injury.

Since joining Wednesday from Wigan Athletic in January, Windass has made four appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals. He’s struggled for regular playing time under Garry Monk but is keen to stay and has the support from fans to see the season out at Hillsborough.

Time will tell whether he plays a part in Wednesday’s run-in.
