“Sickner” “Didn’t Deserve That” – Monk Gutted As Wednesday Drop Points From A Winning Position

|

Sheffield Wednesday made the trip to Ewood Park this weekend for Saturday’s Championship clash against Blackburn Rovers.

The aim for manager Garry Monk was obvious, get back to winning ways and pick up three points to keep the pressure on the automatic spots given we went into the match sat in fifth place in the table.

It was a fairly mixed game really when it came to chances on the day but the game exploded to life in the final ten minutes of the match. Jacob Murphy looked to have won it for us in the 83rd minute, but two goals inside of only three minutes turned the game on its head and sent the points to the home side.

Hugely frustrating, especially as Fernando Forestieri could’ve had us level in stoppage time, but his effort came off the bar and Sam Hutchinson saw his follow up saved.

Speaking to the BBC following the end of the game, the gaffer said of our efforts across the 90 minutes.

“It’s a sickner, no two ways about it. We are disappointed. It was exactly what we prepared for; a competitive, strong game, both teams trying to push each other. To be in the position we prepared for and wanted to be in the 85th minute, where we had worked extremely hard to get in that position, we know full well ourselves…from being in control, with the goal and the three points, we should have seen that game out. There was a lack of concentration in that five minutes and a couple of individual mistakes where we got punished as heavily as you can get punished. Of course we didn’t deserve that in terms of how we played the game but it happened and you can’t afford that at any level.”
