Sheffield Wednesday could be without 29-year-old against Bristol City

|

Fernando Forestieri has been out of action for all of December and may not return to time to face Bristol City on Sunday. The 29-year-old suffered a knee injury in Sheffield Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Charlton Athletic and isn’t making much progress in his recovery.

Forestieri missed the Owls’ 2-1 win over Brentford (December 7), 1-1 draw with Derby County (December 11) and 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest (December 14). Garry Monk told the Sheffield Star that Wednesday will monitor his progress before a decision is made ahead of Sunday’s clash.

He said: “We will have a look at him this week. It is a niggly one. It is nothing major anything like that but it is something we are going to have to monitor. Those types of injuries are dictated by the player. We have to be careful (with Fernando).”

Forestieri has made 10 appearances in all competitions this season, racking up a paltry 312 minutes of football. The Italian forward has endured injury problems, leading to inconsistent form and a lack of playing time. He’s netted only once in 2019/20 and can’t get a run of games together under Garry Monk.

Steven Fletcher, Jordan Rhodes and Atdhe Nuhui may be ahead of Forestieri in the pecking order too, so it’s hard to see the 29-year-old getting much playing time upon his return. He faces a race to be fit in time for Sunday’s meeting.
