Explained: Why Kieran Lee missed Sheffield Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest

|

Kieran Lee was a surprise omission from Sheffield Wednesday’s matchday squad in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest. The 31-year-old has made 15 Championship appearances this season and been an unused substitute on six occasions.

Saturday’s game was the first time Lee has failed to make the squad, but there was a good reason behind it – Garry Monk told the Sheffield Star that his wife was due to give birth. Whether the 31-year-old is back in time to face Bristol City on Sunday remains to be seen, however.

In Lee’s place, Monk gave the nod to Alex Hunt – a 19-year-old midfielder who has been an unused substitute on two occasions. Joey Pelupessy was also on the bench. Monk was short of midfield options as Sam Hutchinson was serving the first of a two-match ban for 10 yellow cards. He’ll be out against Bristol City too.

Massimo Luongo started alongside Barry Bannan on Saturday and could keep his place in midfield next Sunday. Wednesday are currently fifth in the Championship with 36 points from 22 games, having won three and drawn two of their last five outings.
