Goalkeeper returns from injury

|

Keiren Westwood returned from injury and made the matchday squad as Sheffield Wednesday thrashed Nottingham Forest 4-0 at the City Ground. He was an unused substitute on Saturday but his recovery is good news for Garry Monk.

The 35-year-old had been out of action for a number of weeks with a shoulder injury, causing him to miss Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham City (November 27), 3-1 win over Charlton Athletic (November 30), 2-1 win over Brentford (December 7) and 1-1 draw with Derby County (December 11).

Westwood has made 15 appearances this season, conceding 16 goals and keeping only four clean sheets. He’s struggled for consistency at times and would likely have lost his place in goal without the injury, so the Republic of Ireland is expected to stay on the bench.

Cameron Dawson has impressed in Westwood’s stead and should remain first-choice under Monk. The 24-year-old has made 10 appearances in all competitions, conceding six goals and keeping five clean sheets. He’s shut out as many Championship sides as Westwood (4) in seven fewer games too.

Wednesday next face Bristol City on Sunday and should line up with Dawson in goal – he kept a clean sheet on his 50th appearance.
