According to Alan Nixon of The Sun, Steven Fletcher could stay at Sheffield Wednesday beyond the summer, but his wages ‘may be less than before’.

The 33-year-old is out of contract later this month and will be released if Wednesday don’t announce an extension to his deal before June 24.

The Owls can either tie Fletcher down until the end of the revised season or agree a deal to keep him beyond 2020. As things stand, however, the Scottish international will become a free agent in the coming days.

Wednesday have to prepare for their meeting with Nottingham Forest on Saturday, so Garry Monk needs to know which players will be available for the run-in.

Fletcher has made 29 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring 13 goals and making two assists. The 33-year-old is Wednesday’s top scorer, hitting the back of the net more times in the league than Fernando Forestieri (2), Atdhe Nuhiu (3), Jordan Rhodes (3), Connor Wickham (0) and Sam Winnall (1) collectively, so Monk can’t be without him.

The prolific centre-forward currently earns £1.56m-a-year/£30k-a-week, but Dejphon Chansiri is trying to trim the wage bill, so it appears players are only being offered lower deals.
