According to Alan Nixon of The Sun, Morgan Fox could still sign a new deal at Sheffield Wednesday if he’s willing to accept lower terms. The 26-year-old has been in talks since January over a contract extension, but little progress has been made.
Vital Wednesday pondered whether the growing interest from other clubs was the reason for Fox having second thoughts, but Nixon’s quotes suggest it is down to money. The Covid-19 pandemic whittled away clubs’ finances, so Wednesday are having to trim the wage bill. Dejphon Chansiri’s overspending is also to blame.
Despite the positive news that Fox could stay, time is running out. The 26-year-old is out of contract in a week unless Wednesday can announce a new deal. The Owls can extend his contract until the end of the revised season, beyond 2020 or let him leave on a free transfer.
Garry Monk tied down Matt Penney to a one-year deal and has Liam Palmer who can operate at left-back, so Wednesday have options next season if Fox does leave. There are just seven days remaining before his future must be clarified.
It also remains to be seen whether Fox will play against Nottingham Forest on June 20.
