Matt Penney featured for FC St Pauli in Sunday’s 2-1 win over FC Erzgebirge Aue, making an assist at the Millerntor-Stadion behind closed doors.

Prior to the weekend clash, Penney hadn’t featured in St Pauli’s last four games, but he played for 45 minutes against Erzgebirge before being replaced by Luis Coordes.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Penney tweeted his delight at contributing in St Pauli’s victory and was praised by a lot of Sheffield Wednesday supporters. The 22-year-old will return to Hillsborough next month, so fans will be happy seeing him in decent form before his loan is up.

The 22-year-old recently signed a new deal and could be Wednesday’s left-back next season if Morgan Fox leaves. Penney has made 17 appearances for the Owls since rising through the youth ranks to the first-team in 2016.

His last outing for Wednesday came in November 2018, so last summer’s loan move to St Pauli was meant to land him regular first-team football. Penney has made 15/32 appearances in Germany, so he’s played more frequently than he would have at Sheffield and has three games remaining to finish the season on a high.
