According to The Sheffield Star, Sheffield Wednesday have moved to ‘extend’ Joey Pelupessy’s contract. The Owls have ‘exercised’ the midfielder’s ‘one-year option’.

The move comes as a surprise, as Pelupessy struggled for form and playing time before the season was postponed, but Wednesday’s eventual decision may come down to Garry Monk facing a midfield exodus this summer.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Pelupessy joined the Owls from Heracles Almelo in 2018 and has gone on to make 71 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and making three assists. The Dutch midfielder was a regular in his first two seasons, but he fell down the pecking order under Monk.

Pelupessy made 17/42 appearances across the board this season and amassed only 690/3780 minutes of Championship football. The 27-year-old’s deal was up this summer, so his future was up in the air, but Wednesday clearly feel he’s worth keeping.

Sam Hutchinson and Kieran Lee are out of contract in the coming months, so Monk would be left with only Barry Bannan, Massimo Luongo and Alex Hunt if Pelupessy wasn’t retained.

The 27-year-old has a lot to prove after a disappointing campaign, but he still has nine more chances to vindicate the decision.
