Kieran Lee has an uncertain future as his contract is up this summer and no progress has been made on renewing his deal.

The 31-year-old has been a regular under Garry Monk and would be worth keeping as there could be a midfield exodus at Sheffield Wednesday, but Yorkshire Live said last month that the decision may be down to finances.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Lee has made 25 appearances in all competitions this season, playing in eight of Wednesday’s last 11 games before the campaign was postponed due to Covid-19. He’s likely to feature heavily in the Owls’ final nine league games, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Lee’s contract was allowed to run down.

Wednesday have been grooming his replacement – Alex Hunt. The 20-year-old has made three first-team appearances and has been mentored by Barry Bannan, so he could make the step-up next season. Hunt is a ball-playing midfielder who regularly trains with the senior squad and signed a new deal in September 2019, so his future looks bright at Hillsborough.

With Lee turning 32 in less than three weeks while earning £0.96m-a-year/£18k-a-week in wages, Wednesday would save a lot of money letting him go. Dejphon Chansiri needs to trim the wage bill and Monk said difficult decisions need to be made on players, so could Lee be a surprise casualty?
