Sheffield Wednesday confirm that Liam Palmer ‘will miss out’ against Hull City after picking up an ankle injury in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Cardiff City. The 28-year-old suffered swelling on his leg after receiving a robust challenge from Junior Hoilett and will be eased back into action in the New Year.

Palmer has been a regular under Garry Monk, making 19 appearances this season. The Scotland international lost his place in the side for a number of weeks after being sent off in Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion (November 23), but he returned to the starting lineup after Moses Odubajo was suspended.

Monk could choose from Odubajo or Dominic Iorfa to replace Palmer, but he’s likely to opt for the former. Moses has made 14 appearances at right-back this season and only lost his place after being sent off in their 1-1 draw with Derby County (December 11).

Regardless of team selection, Wednesday can’t afford any more slip-ups. The Owls are at risk of falling out of the Championship playoffs if they fall short against Hull and haven’t been in the best form of late. Monk’s side go into their midweek clash off the back of consecutive defeats.
