Official: Sheff Wed confirm ‘short-term’ deal for goalkeeper

|

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that Paul Jones has signed a ‘short-term’ deal until the end of the revised season. The 33-year-old was out of contract this summer, but he’s staying on for an extra month. It remains to be seen whether Jones will be retained beyond 2020, however.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

The English goalkeeper joined Wednesday on a free transfer from Fleetwood Town amid an injury crisis, but he’s spent most of the season as Garry Monk’s fourth choice, behind Cameron Dawson, Joe Wildsmith, Keiren Westwood in the pecking order. Jones hasn’t made an appearance for the Owls and has only made the matchday squad on eight occasions.

With Westwood making 14 appearances, Dawson making 28 appearances, Wildsmith making two appearances, it’s surprising that Wednesday are extending the contract of a player who hasn’t featured this season. But Jones could make the bench if Dawson or Wildsmith are injured, as Westwood has been frozen out of the first-team since November 2019.

But with Jones having been left out of the matchday squad in 2020, it’s likely that he will be released in July. Westwood could follow, so Monk will need a replacement goalkeeper brought in.
