Advancing age, lofty wages, inconsistent form – Monk may struggle to sell Sheff Wed man

|

Keiren Westwood is surplus to requirements at Sheffield Wednesday after falling down the pecking order under Garry Monk and may be transfer listed this summer.

The 35-year-old was dropped in November 2019 and didn’t make the matchday squad in the four months that followed, so a return to the first-team looks highly unlikely.

Wednesday may struggle to find a suitor for Westwood, however, as he’s not getting any younger, earns a lot of money for a Championship player and has been inconsistent this season.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

The shot-stopper turns 36 in October, currently earns £1.56m-a-year/£30k-a-week and has been guilty of making errors leading to goals. That led to him being dropped for Cameron Dawson. His deal doesn’t expire until 2021, but why would a club pay to sign him?

Westwood joined the Owls on a free transfer from Sunderland in 2014 and has gone on to make 179 appearances in all competitions, conceding 172 goals and keeping 67 clean sheets. The Republic of Ireland international was a regular before his form dipped and may now have to leave for more playing time.

Unless Wednesday can agree a fee with Westwood to terminate his contract this summer, they may have to wait for a club to make an offer.
