Loanee “asked to extend” stay at Sheff Wed, Monk says there’s “time to be finalised”

Garry Monk has revealed that Josh Windass has been “asked to extend” his stay at Sheffield Wednesday. The Owls manager also said there’s “still time for that to be finalised” despite their Championship return being just days away.

Windass’ loan deal is up at the end of the month and Wednesday have until June 23 to either extend his contract or let him return to Wigan Athletic. The 26-year-old has been ruled out for three weeks with injury too, so his future at Hillsborough is uncertain.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Monk said in a pre-match press conference: “We need (players) in this period and I’m hopeful things will get done. The (loanees) have been asked to extend and there is still time for that to be finalised.

“We have one game, a week’s break and then eight games back to back which will be massive. Pre-empting that, there will be a lot of changes for freshness, there could be injuries, anything and we have to be ready for that.”

Windass has made four appearances in all competitions since joining from Wigan in January, scoring twice. He’s keen to stay at Wednesday, but his injury could see him miss five of the remaining nine games.

The Owls face Nottingham Forest (June 20), Bristol City (June 28), West Brom (July 1), Swansea City (July 4), and Preston North End (July 7) over the next three weeks, so is it worth keeping Windass?

The likelihood is that he’ll stay if it means playing a small part in Wednesday’s run-in. If Monk has asked all his loanees to stay on until mid-July, Windass is expected to oblige.
