Garry Monk confirmed in a pre-match press conference that Steven Fletcher has “trained all week” ahead of Sheffield Wednesday’s meeting with Nottingham Forest after having “picked up an injury” at Middlewood last week.

Monk said: “With Fletch, he picked up an injury last week so he didn’t train – a slight niggle. But he has been back in training this week and trained all week, so that’s good.” The 33-year-old is likely to start against Forest, as Wednesday look to turn their form around after struggling in 2020.

The Owls are currently 15th in the Championship with 48 points from 37 games, having picked up just one win from their last ten games.

Wednesday face Nottingham Forest (June 20), Bristol City (June 28), West Brom (July 1), Swansea City (July 4), and Preston North End (July 7) in their remaining nine outings and are trying to tie down Fletcher for the run-in.

Monk added: “In terms of the players in the group that are out of contract, they have been asked to extend beyond this month and into next to complete these games and that’s the short term view right now.”

Fletcher’s deal is up this summer and he’ll be a free agent on July 1 if Wednesday can’t agree terms. The Owls have until June 23 to extend his contract or announce that he’ll be released.

The 33-year-old has scored 13 goals and made two assists in 29 games this season, so he’s an important player for Monk, but Wednesday will only have Fletcher for two more games if he doesn’t put pen to paper on a new deal.
