Explained: Which Arsenal striker are Sheffield Wednesday trying to sign in January?

|

Sheffield Wednesday are looking to bolster their attack in the January transfer window as they’ve been over-reliant on Steve Fletcher this season. The 32-year-old has contributed 14 goals in 22 games, but Wednesday don’t have any other striker to rely upon in his absence.

Sam Winnall has one goal in nine league games, Atdhe Nuhui has two goals in 21, Fernando Forestieri has one goal in nine and Jordan Rhodes has three goals in 10. The Owls were looking at signing Rhian Brewster on loan from Liverpool but appear to have turned their attentions elsewhere.

According to Gregor MacGregor and James Piercy of Bristol Live, Wednesday are looking to hijack Bristol City’s pursuit of Eddie Nketiah. The 20-year-old is expected to return early from his loan spell at Leeds United and will be allowed another temporary move away in January.

Nketiah joined Leeds in August but has amassed only 450 minutes of Championship football, spread out over 16 appearances. Despite the lack of playing time, the England u21 international has still scored and created four goals for his troubles and would improve Wednesday’s squad if signed.

Bristol Live say Brentford and Nottingham Forest are also keen on the striker. He’ll return to parent club Arsenal in the next 24 hours and his short-term future should be resolved after that.
