Report: Sheffield Wednesday suffer blow in pursuit of 26-year-old as Cardiff hijack deal

|

Sheffield Wednesday have suffered a blow in their pursuit of Connor Wickham as Cardiff City have hijacked the deal. Wednesday haven’t made much progress bringing the 26-year-old back to Hillsborough in recent weeks and may now lose out to their Championship rivals.

According to The Sun (h/t HITC), Cardiff have made a loan bid to Crystal Palace for Wickham and will pay 50% of his wages (£30k-per-week) – considerably more than the Owls offered (£12k-per-week).

Garry Monk previously admitted that Wednesday were struggling to land transfer targets due to so much competition this month, and it appears Wickham may be one that slips through their fingers. With Steven Fletcher out with a knee injury, the Owls desperately need a prolific striker to come in.

Jordan Rhodes has been told he’s surplus to requirements, Sam Winnall only has one goal in 12 league games this season, Atdhe Nuhiu only has three goals in 24 games while Fernando Forestieri has spent the last two months sidelined with a knee injury.

Wednesday are running out of time to strengthen their attack and Cardiff may have beaten them to their No.1 target.
