Garry Monk admits that he “can’t put a date on” when Steve Fletcher will return for Sheffield Wednesday. The 32-year-old has been out of action since New Year’s Day with a knee injury and was initially expected to be out for up to 10 weeks.

Monk doesn’t know when to expect Fletcher back now, however, but he says his recovery is “on schedule”. The Wednesday manager told Dom Howson of the Sheffield Star: “He is still indoors. He is not outside at the moment. As far as I am aware and speaking to the physios every day, he is on schedule.

I can’t put a date on it because we don’t know but he is still doing his rehab in the gym. He is working every day with the physios and doing well. He has not had any setbacks so far so hopefully he can progress quickly.”

Wednesday need Fletcher back as soon as possible, as the 32-year-old has scored more league goals (12) than Atdhe Nuhiu (3), Jordan Rhodes (3), Fernando Forestieri (1) and Sam Winnall (1) combined this season.

Winnall hasn’t scored since September 2019, Forestieri hasn’t scored or played since November, Nuhiu has scored just one goal since November while Rhodes hasn’t scored since mid-December. All four players are out of contract in July too.

The Owls are expected to bring in another striker before the January transfer window shuts, having been linked with Connor Wickham among others, but they’re not making much progress due to competition from Cardiff City. Time will tell if they’re successful adding to their attack.
