Opinion: Sheffield Wednesday should go all out to sign 29 y/o this summer

|

Sheffield Wednesday could be losing up to five strikers this summer – Sam Winnall, Jordan Rhodes, Atdhe Nuhiu and Fernando Forestieri are all out of contract in July and may not be handed extensions while Connor Wickham will return to Crystal Palace at the end of the season after his loan spell at Hillsborough.

Garry Monk will be left with only Steven Fletcher at his disposal and will need to bring in another striker to bolster his options. One player Wednesday have been linked with is Lyle Taylor. The 29-year-old is coming off the back of a prolific season with Charlton Athletic and could be available on a free transfer if he doesn’t sign a new deal.

Should the football season be cut short now or delayed for weeks/months due to COVID-19?

End the season now

Delay for weeks/months

Taylor joined Charlton from AFC Wimbledon in 2018 and has gone on to make 67 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating 50 goals. The Montserrat international has 11 goals in 22 Championship games this season and is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal at the Valley.

Taylor rejected a contract extension in December 2019 and Charlton were open to offers in January 2020. But no deal materialised in the winter transfer window and Charlton held out hope of keeping their striker for another season.

But with the Addicks currently 22nd in the Championship and two points adrift of safety, Taylor may want a club that can at least consolidate in the second tier. Wednesday should test the waters. Rhodes (3), Wickham (0), Winnall (1), Nuhiu (3) and Forestieri (2) have only managed nine goals between them this season – two less than Taylor has netted on his own.
