Joe West could be leaving Sheffield Wednesday this summer as he’s out of contract in the coming months and hasn’t made a first-team appearance since signing a professional contract in 2018.

The 19-year-old failed to feature in the matchday squad of any Championship, EFL Cup or FA Cup game last season and hasn’t been left out of every Championship, EFL Cup and FA Cup outing this campaign too.

So with The Athletic saying earlier this month that West has been told by Wednesday that he’s surplus to requirements, a departure looks on the cards this summer.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

West joined the Owls in 2016 and impressed enough at youth level to sign his first professional deal two years later. The 19-year-old’s contract was up in 2019 before Wednesday took up an option to extend his deal for 12 months, but they don’t look likely to do the same this summer.

West hasn’t progressed since 2018 and is likely to be behind Morgan Fox and Matt Penney in the pecking order next season, so there’s no reason the Owls will retain his services.

The 19-year-old is one of many players from the U23s who could be offloaded in the coming months, but he may have seen this coming after being overlooked for the first-team for so long.
