Sheff Wed ‘in talks’ with 19 y/o, club have ‘plans beyond 2021’ – defender’s future explained

According to the Sheffield Star, Sheffield Wednesday are ‘in talks’ with Osaze Urhoghide over a new deal. The Owls have the option to extend his deal for another year but the Star believe Wednesday have ‘plans beyond 2021’.

Urhoghide broke into the first-team earlier in the campaign and looks to have a future at Hillsborough despite an inconsistent time under Garry Monk. The 19-year-old has Liam Palmer and Moses Odubajo for competition, but a new deal suggests he’ll be given more opportunities next season.

Urhoghide rose through the youth ranks to the first-team in January and has gone on to make four appearances in all competitions.

The right-back made his debut in Wednesday’s FA Cup win over Brighton & Hove Albion (January 4) and followed it up in the Owls’ 2-0 win over Leeds United (January 11), 5-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers (January 18) and 3-0 defeat to Reading (February 15).

Despite spending a lot of time on the bench and being left out of the matchday squad on a number of occasions, Urhoghide has made an impression on Monk and could be committing his future at Wednesday for the long-term.

The Owls still have Morgan Fox, Kieran Lee, Joey Pelupessy, Sam Hutchinson, Sam Winnall, Atdhe Nuhiu, Fernando Forestieri and Steven Fletcher out of contract this summer, but it appears they’ve made progress tying the 19-year-old down.
