Opinion: Right-back could leave Sheff Wed, contract may expire this summer

|

Ciaran Brennan could be on his way out of Sheffield Wednesday this summer as his contract may be up in the coming months.

As per the Sheffield Star, Fraser Preston, Joe West, Jordan O’Brien, Ben Hughes, Josh Render and Brennan all signed a new deal in 2019, but only the length of Preston and Hughes’ deal were disclosed – 12 months.

The Star added that Wednesday ‘took up contract options’ on West and Brennan, so it sounds like their deals have been extended by a year. And with The Athletic confirming earlier in May that West, Preston and Hughes’ contracts are set to expire this summer, it’s highly likely Brennan’s will too.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Brennan joined Wednesday in 2013 and has risen through the youth ranks to the fringes of the first-team. He signed a professional contract in 2018 but hasn’t managed to feature at senior level. His only experience of real competitive football came during a loan spell at Gainsborough Trinity last year.

Brennan joined the BetVictor Northern Premier League club in September 2019 and left a month later. The 20-year-old impressed enough to be named Player of the Month, but he’s still playing five divisions below Wednesday, so he’s not at the level required to be retained.
