Injury boost for Sheff Wed as £1.44m-rated man “should be available” to face Swansea City

Garry Monk says Julian Borner “should be available” for Sheffield Wednesday ahead of Sunday afternoon’s meeting with Swansea City. The 29-year-old suffered a dead leg in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Bristol City last Sunday and missed the Owls’ 3-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday. He’s on the recovery trail, however, and should make the squad that travels to the Liberty Stadium.

Monk told Wednesday’s official website: “The game on Wednesday was a little too soon for Julian but he should be fully recovered. He trained yesterday and will train today. He should be available for the weekend. In terms of preparation time we know it’s difficult, it’s about recovering as much as we can and keeping them as fresh as we can.”

Borner has been a regular under Monk this season, making 35 appearances in all competitions and scoring one goal. He’s recently impressed as part of a three-man defence containing Dominic Iorfa and Liam Palmer, but Monk turned to Moses Odubajo in his absence. Borner has trained in the week leading up to the Swansea clash, so there’s a chance the £1.44m-rated defender could play.

Ahead of the meeting, Wednesday are 14th in the Championship with 52 points from 40 games, coming off the back of one draw, one win and one defeat since football returned in England. They face a City side four places and five points better off in the table but having picked up one point in their last two games, so Wednesday shouldn’t be written off.
