Garry Monk reveals if Steven Fletcher could be offered a new deal next summer

|

Garry Monk confirmed his intention to tie down Steven Fletcher to a new deal next summer. The 32-year-old has been in fantastic form this season, scoring and creating 11 goals in 20 games for Sheffield Wednesday, but his expiring contract has raised questions over his long-term future.

Fletcher signed for Wednesday on a free transfer in July 2016, agreeing a four-year deal after leaving Sunderland. The Scotland international is nearly in the last six months of his contract at Hillsborough, but it doesn’t appear he’ll be allowed to leave.

Monk told the Sheffield Star: “Of course (I want to retain Fletcher’s services). That goes without saying. He has been fantastic. I know he had a good start to the season but since I have come in I have enjoyed working with him.

“He is doing exactly what is needed and scoring goals is the bonus that everyone wants on top for himself, the fans and everyone else. He is having a very good season and we just want him to maintain that.”

Should Sheffield Wednesday offer Steven Fletcher a new deal?

Yes

No

In the last three years, Fletcher has contributed 43 goals in 126 games for Wednesday. In recent weeks, he’s bagged five times in four league appearances, having a hand in 71% of his side’s goals. The centre-forward is joint-fifth in the Championship scoring charts and is vital for Wednesday’s pursuit of a top-six finish.

The Owls are currently sixth in the table with 32 points from 20 games, coming off the back of two wins and a draw from their last three. Wednesday are only three points off third-placed Fulham too. Without Fletcher’s goals (10), they’d be the second-lowest scorers (18).
