Manager comments suggest 24-year-old Sheffield Wednesday man will be handed a new deal

|

Garry Monk recently spoke out about the future of Cameron Dawson, admitting he wants the 24-year-old to stay at Sheffield Wednesday for the long-term. Dawson is out of contract in 2020 and has yet to put pen to paper on a contract extension, but Monk’s latest comments suggest the goalkeeper won’t be allowed to leave on a free transfer next summer.

He told Wednesday’s official website: “Obviously he’s a player, with the age he is and where he’s at for the club, who we see here. I think he has been fantastic. You have got to think of the future and the long term future is with Cameron, and with Joe (Wildsmith) coming back to fitness, you have two young goalkeepers who are the future of the club.

“You want to keep those players and I’ve made it clear they are going to be a big part of what I want do here. Cameron has been fantastic, and he has to concentrate on his football and the other side of it will be taken care of. In time we’ll all sit down together and go through a lot of things but his job is to focus on football and he knows that.”

Dawson has made seven appearances in all competitions this season, conceding four goals and keeping four clean sheets. He replaced the injured Keiren Westwood in late-November and should remain as Wednesday’s No.1 shot-stopper even the 35-year-old returns.

Westwood struggled for form before picking up a shoulder knock and would have likely lost his spot in the starting eleven. So long as Dawson stays fit and avoids making errors leading to goals, he should remain a regular under Monk. He’s openly stated his desire to stay in Sheffield past 2020 too.

Wildsmith is currently injured, but he’s made 48 appearances for the Owls and has three years remaining on his deal at Hillsborough.
