Garry Monk has confirmed in a Zoom press conference that Sam Winnall has “picked up a niggle” and will miss Sheffield Wednesday’s meeting with Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Owls boss revealed that Winnall hasn’t trained in a number of weeks due to his inability to shake off the knock, so it’s unknown if or when he’ll feature for Wednesday again.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

In quotes reported by Yorkshire Live, Monk said: “Sam Winnall has picked up a niggle and hasn’t been training for the last couple of weeks. Everyone else has been training.”

The 29-year-old finds himself behind Steven Fletcher, Fernando Forestieri and Atdhe Nuhiu in the pecking and hasn’t featured under Monk since January, so his future at Hillsborough is uncertain.

Winnall has made 17 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring two goals and making one assist – his last outing was in Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic (January 28).

Since joining the Owls from Barnsley in 2017, Winnall has gone on to make 43 appearances across the board, contributing a total of eight goals. He’s fallen out of favour this season and is in the final few weeks of his contract, so a departure looks on the cards.

Wednesday will lock horns with Forest (June 20) and Bristol City (June 28) before Winnall’s deal runs out, but it’s unlikely he’ll feature.
