Why Further Recruitment Is Probably Not A Requirement

So the transfer window is due to slam shut in less than a week`s time and so far we have only brought in one new player in Joey Pelupessy. Obviously the transfer window is always an interesting and exciting time for football fans who are constantly scouring social media for the latest rumours on ins and outs but as I feel that we may well be better off sticking with what we have until the summer.

As things stand it`s highly unlikely that we will make the top six unless we go on some sort of incredible winning streak and unless we go on a huge losing run, we won`t be going down either. I feel, even with the players we have out injured and unavailable for selection, we still have enough about us to finish the season in mid table, so is there a need to add more new faces right now?

I personally feel the signing of Joey Pelupessy, which could work out to be a very shrewd acquisition, was completed because the price was right due to him only having a few months left on his deal at Heracles. He`s the sort of player we need and at the right age too but there`s less risk involved when we`ve only spent a few hundred thousand on him, so it`s a good deal all round.

It`s been repeatedly said about how FFP or Profit and Sustainability is a very live issue at the club right now. I do think we are entering a period where the squad needs to be properly assessed and then reshaped and I don`t think we`re in a position, due to the amount of injuries and fitness concerns, where we can actually get players out of the door either. You can`t just keep signing for the sake of signing and the winter window is notoriously hard to do business in, although we seem to make hard work of transfers in the summer months too.

Jos getting players such as Tom Lees, Joost van Aken, Sam Hutchinson, Barry Bannan, Kieran Lee, Fernando Forestieri, Steven Fletcher and Gary Hooper back will be like having new signings as it is and recovering the missing bunch will undoubtedly improve our fortunes on the pitch, especially in an attacking sense. It will also give Jos the opportunity between now and the end of the season to fully evaluate the majority of players at the club and he`ll be able to instruct the chairman on which he’d like us to attempt to move on in the summer.

What we`ve also seen recently is some of the U23 players getting a chance to prove themselves in the first team too. Ash Baker, Connor O`Grady, Frederik Nielsen, Jordan Thorniley and Sean Clare have all found themselves involved, with the latter 4 getting some minutes under their belt. This is likely to continue going forward too, which will certainly delight most Wednesday fans but opportunities will likely reduce if we bring new faces in.

People may say that players returning from injury means that the chances for some of the U23s to impress may become limited and that is correct but by being able to utilise these players it means there is less pressure on the seniors to recover from injury and to rehab quicker. There`s no extra cost involved as there would be if we were to sign or loan from elsewhere too, which must be seen as a positive.

While I wouldn`t personally complain at new players been brought in, I do feel this is a period for assessing what we have and also to put in place strategies for both the short and long term of the club on the footballing side. It also gives the current players the chance to prove their worth and to get used to Jos and his methods.
