Tomorrow’s visit of Coventry City to Hillsborough doesn’t just mark a huge clash for Brian Laws and his men, but it also marks the start of a testing three game spell in less than a week.
The visit of the Sky Blues is followed by a home date with high-flying Preston North End on Tuesday night and a swift trip down the M1 on Friday night for a televised game against Watford at Vicarage Road.
It’s an important spell for Wednesday, no doubt, but it’s also a tricky test which the Owls have already failed this season.
A trio of matches in six days last month against Nottingham Forest, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United respectively, brought just one point from a possible nine not so long ago.
The performances were there, in patches, but the points weren’t, and points win prizes in a Championship division which is ever so close this season.
It’s time for the Owls to ‘re-sit’ their test in October, and boss Laws and company will be looking for much better fortunes against, shall we say, a much more comfortable set of matches on paper at least.
With all respect to the three challengers that lie in wait for Wednesday, the trio we came up against in September are likely to be much higher up the table, as a trio, than our opponents in our coming matches.
It’ll mean expectations are higher from Wednesdayites expecting a good response from the thrashing at Derby County last time out.
It’ll also mean Laws will have to have a much better handling of any rotation policy he’ll need to implement to keep players fresh over the course of the six days.
There’s no reason why Wednesday can’t take nine points from their next three games, no reason at all.
Home games give us the chance to bag points against anyone in the division, and although the Sky Blues and Preston, in particular, will offer stern tests over the next few days, they’re both winnable.
Watford, too, have hardly had a great start to the season, and the points will be there for the taking.
in return, I’m sure all three teams will be saying just the same about coming up a Wednesday who’ve been very inconsistent this term, and pretty much since Laws has arrived at the helm.
They say it only takes a minute to score a goal, well, it only takes a week to totally change the outlook of a season, and it could well be the case for Wednesday this week as they look to get their season firmly back on track.
