Sheff Wed defender ‘will not feature’ against Birmingham, Monk says he “won’t be available”

|

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that Moses Odubajo ‘will not feature’ against Birmingham City on Saturday. The 26-year-old has been out of action since early-February with a groin injury, causing him to miss Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Barnsley (February 8), 1-0 defeat to Luton Town (February 12) and 3-0 defeat to Reading (February 15).

Monk said in Thursday’s pre-match press conference: “Mo (is) still not ready and, again, hopefully we will see (him) sooner rather than later, I know (he is) progressing well but won’t be available for this week.” Odubao has made 17 appearances in all competitions this season, the last of which came in Wednesday’s 0-0 draw with Millwall (February 1).

In his absence, Monk has called upon Tom Lees, Liam Palmer, Osaze Urhoghide and Dominic Iorfa to varying degrees of success. Wednesday are struggling in general since the turn of the year and have the third-worst defensive record in the Championship (13) – only Hull City (15) and Huddersfield Town (17) have conceded more goals in 2020.

The Owls have fallen to 12th in the Championship too and have 44 points from 33 games. Monk’s side are winless in their last six and have picked up only five points from a possible 30. Birmingham, however, are coming off the back of three wins from four games and haven’t lost in their last seven. Saturday’s meeting will be a tricky affair.
