Wednesday’s honeymoon period back in League One is well and truly over as they suffered their second consecutive 1-0 defeat.

Following last weekend’s abysmal televised performance against Brentford, manager Alan Irvine made just the one change, with Clinton Morrison in for the absent Neil Mellor.

Frankie Simek returned back to Hillsborough for the first time since he was released in the summer. Former Owls loanee, Graham Kavanagh was named on the Cumbrians bench.

The Owls did start the game brighter, Marcus Tudgay had an early effort on goal that flew wide. Carlisle hit back and almost broke the deadlock through Gary Madine after he was put through by Francois Zoko. Fortunately for the Owls, ‘keeper Nicky Weaver was on hand to block Madine’s route to goal.

Aside from a Chris Sedgewick goalbound effort that was blocked, the visitors were dominating the play. Madine and Zoko were causing the Owls defence problems, but it was the previously unmentioned Craig Curren who got the goal.

Curren, was allowed far too much freedom and fired in a shot from the left, which left Weaver with no chance.

The goal was totally deserved and the Owls could have no complaints at going in at the break behind.

Wednesday were surely given a rollocking at the break, but it made little difference as the Cumbrians again took the initiative and almost doubled their lead through Curren, and a Darren Purse slice almost went into his own net.

Both Paul Heffernan and James O’Connor were introduced to try and force an equaliser, but to no avail. The closest they came was through the second Irishman, but his shot was sliced wide.

The Owls got what they deserved: nothing and Carlisle jump above them in the table, maintaining their unbeaten record.

  • simple not good enough to predictable every attack in the 2nd half came down the left we did’nt play to feet as was never going to be micahlik in the air it’s rubbish we need jj desperately

  • christ almighty, whats going on? to be fair, when we was winning at the beginning, we wasnt very convincing then (except hartlepool). im hoping all the new players are still getting used to eachother or it could be a long season. to be honest, im starting to lose faith in our once great club.

  • To be honest with no mallace ment for ther other sides,we should walk this league with the team we have in place.Everyone has a bad day at the office and with our team you could expect a draw now and then. But when we are getting turned over at home its no way allowed.Lets just hope our bleep ends now.

  • Unacceptable performance from everyone with the possible exception of the goalkeeper. I include the manager who appears to have no idea how to change a game. Same old, same old. Very, very predictable and so easy for any organised team to sort out. Takes them about 15 minutes, which was the same as at Brentford as it was against Carlisle. We do not have a given right to automatic promotion, and on the showing of the last 2 games it is not likely that we will be anywhere near the top come next May.
Proffessional footballers should not have been phased by the weeks events, and it certainly cannot be levelled as an excuse for the inept performance against Brentford. Come on AI step up to the plate.

  • For the first time I must criticise AI. Sedgwick was terrible last Sunday, and yet retained his place this week. What message does this send to those fighting for a place? Why, when players are underperforming, did he not make a half time substitution? Why does he still put Potter in midfield? We can’t blame the strikers when the midfield does not exisit. How about this – put our most energetic player, Tugay, in midfield. Put in Jones, a big strong player on the left, and try another defender in midfield to actually win the ball. Remeber when Ron Atkinson did this with Stephanovich? And finally, how about if you put the shirt on you also want to win the ball?

  • Normal service has been resumed at Hillsborough. Complete dross with no goals AGAIN! Another poor result and mid table mediocraty. Worse still it’s only September and we have 40 more dissapointments to look forward to. Would someone please come in and give the whole club a massive kick up the backside before it’s too late.

  • there as been talk that some players not getting paid as anyone else heard anything, that is why mellor went back to preston cause we could not aford to pay his wages for the loan period

  • It’s still very early in the season to panic, so we as fans need to keep faith in AI and the team (not so sure about faith in the club mind). I think we can all be blamed for getting carried away with the great start we had, but it’s not going to be a walk in the park even with the team we have. Smaller clubs step up a level when faced with big clubs and for the time being we are STILL a big club. So come on guys and gals lets get behind the manager and team no matter what….. UTO WTID

  • Total rubbish. For one, Mellor was ill and is still at Wednesday. I’ve not heard anything re the other. Sounds like we have slipped badly backwards again. I am a massive fan of Irvine but I am going have criticise his tactics. So predictable. I’d put Tudgay on the Wing play Mellor Morrison up top. Sedgewick Teale are so alike. Sounds as if Potter is not improving so hopefully when Miller is fully fit he will start alongside Coke. Keep chins up it may get better. I do think we need a new centre half and this should have been a priority. Purse just gives away so many needless set pieces that we then don’t defend properly, cost us dearly last year.

  • I’m with owlsmad on this one. I am totally p*ssed off that we lost to Brentford and played so poorly and did exactly the same, if not worse, against a team just behind us at the top of the table but I do think it’s too early to start talking about same old Wednesday and comparing us to last season. There is a long way to go in this league and I don’t think it is likely to be the last time we lose, or the last time we lose at home and maybe not the last time we lose two on the trot. We still have a strong team and I think we still have a good manager. After last season, it is going to take some time to rebuild and become the team we need to be to get promoted. I’m sure we can still do that but it probably won’t be easy along the way. I’m confident that the manager and the players can sort this out but the board is another matter entirely and that’s where the real problem remains. I find it hard to accept losing to any team in this division but I think we need to stand by the team when its not going as we would like. I can’t see that cheerng when we’re winning 5-0 one minute and then booing the players off at half-time because we’re losing the next is going to help. It’s hard and it’s extremely frustrating but we’re still Wednesday fans because we stand by the team. I say cheer up, it sucks at the moment but there’s a long way to go and we’re 2 points off the top with more chance of getting promoted than the majority of teams in this league.
