Opinion: Sheff Wed should make ambitious approach for 19 y/o Everton forward

Sheffield Wednesday could lose Jacob Murphy, Alessio Da Cruz and Josh Windass when their loan deals come to an end this summer, forcing Garry Monk to scour the transfer market for replacements.

Dejphon Chansiri’s overspending leaves little in the kitty, so Wednesday will have to look at more loan players and free transfer to build a squad for next season.

One player who should be on their shortlist is Anthony Gordon, as he’s impressed at youth level for Everton and may benefit from regular football next season rather than sporadic appearances.

Gordon has risen through the youth ranks to the fringes of the Everton first-team, making four appearances at senior level. The 19-year-old has only amassed 66 minutes of football, however, so it’s not enough for his development.

With 16 goals & five assists in 31 games for the U18s and eight goals & four assists for the U23s, Gordon has clearly outgrown youth football. He’s rated highly at Everton but may struggling for playing time over Gylfi Sigurdsson, Alex Iwobi and Bernard.

At Wednesday, Gordon would be a regular. The 19-year-old can operate on either flank and as an attacking-midfielder, so he’s exactly the type of versatile player Monk could benefit from.

His eye for goal would be essential if Steven Fletcher does leave, so the Owls should try to convince Everton to loan him out next season – the Toffees did consider sending Gordon to the Championship in January…
