Official: Sheff Wed confirm another defender’s contract extension

Sheffield Wednesday confirm Osaze Urhoghide’s contract has been extended until 2021, following on from Matt Penney. The 19-year-old broke into the first-team earlier this season and currently finds himself a squad player under Garry Monk, so his new deal was expected.

Who did Sheffield Wednesday sign Josh Windass on loan from?

Urhoghide rose through the youth ranks to the Wednesday first-team in January 2020 and has gone on to make four appearances in all competitions. He fell down the pecking order as time went on, however, and eventually found himself behind Liam Palmer and Moses Odubajo at right-back.

Few players impressed in 2020, so it would be unfair to single out the 19-year-old on just a handful of first-team appearances. Monk clearly feels Urhoghide has shown enough promise to be retained for another campaign too.

Vital Wednesday have predicted that Palmer could replace Morgan Fox at left-back if the 26-year-old departs at the end of his contract, leaving Odubajo and Urhoghide to compete for a starting place on the opposite side.

Wednesday aren’t blessed with a lucrative transfer budget this summer, so Monk may have to find internal solutions to players leaving. Urhoghide will be useful in a backup role as he continues his development. Maybe he can push to get his starting place back too.
