Owls manager Gary Megson admitted his side’s first-half performance against Colchester was ‘like watching paint dry’, but ranked the result as the best of the season so far.

Wednesday could find no way through a stubborn U’s defence in a pretty forgetful first 45 minutes at Hillsborough yesterday, but second-half strikes from Rob Jones and Reda Johnson gave Megson’s men the three points.

And the Wednesday manager hailed it as his side’s best performance of the season, insisting the second-half showing was ”terrific’, especially compared to the dull first half.

‘That was our best result of the season given how we played in the first half, when it was like watching paint dry,’ Megson told the official Wednesday website.

‘We said to the players at half time that we needed another 10 to 15 per cent and to their credit, they responded.

‘We were terrific in the second half, we upped the tempo and got our rewards.’

U’s boss John Ward was full of praise for the Owls in his post-match press gathering, saying the better team won.

‘They’re a very powerful team, a very strong team,’ Ward said.

‘We had a lot of the possession in the first half without really worrying their goalkeeper too much, but that’s fine when you come to a club like this.

‘We got overpowered after 15 minutes of the second period. Too many set plays were given away and they come up with the artillery and they’re a very strong team.

‘When they get ahead that lifts the crowd, that lifts their team and for the final 30 minutes we’ve been overpowered by a very good side that play to very good strengths that they’ve got.

‘We’ve been beaten by a better team and I think you’ve got to come and say that.’
