Wednesday manager Gary Megson was full of praise for his side after they saw off Chesterfield 3-1 at Hillsborough and moved into second place in npower League One on Saturday.
The Spireites, managed by Owls legend John Sheridan, proved a tricky test for the on-song Owls, but the hosts stormed to a sixth home win from as many matches so far this term to make it Wednesday’s best home start to a season in 30 years.
Megson hailed goalscorers Lewis Buxton, Gary Madine – who netted his tenth in as many league games – and Ben Marshall but also praised defensive duo Rob Jones and Danny Batth, who he said were unlucky not to keep a clean sheet.
‘Danny and Rob were terrific today,’ he told the official Wednesday website.
‘They showed they are back to their best and the goal we conceded was harsh on them because they deserved a clean sheet.
‘But it was a good win for us, although we were stretched for a short while after Chesterfield scored their goal.
‘We have six wins on the spin at home and that’s terrific but we are not there yet and we will continue to work hard.’
Chesterfield could have snatched an equaliser after Leon Clarke gave them hope with a goal with ten minutes to go, but instead Marshall went down the other end and made it 3-1 with a fine finish.
And Sheridan believes the result was harsh on his men, claiming Chesterfield ‘outplayed’ Wednesday.
He told BBC Radio Sheffield: ‘I thought we played really, really well. We’ve lost the game 3-1 so I’ve said it a few times what I think of our performances and we don’t really get what we deserve out of the game and I think that’s what happened today.
‘We played really well and how we’ve conceded three goals I just don’t know but we have.
‘I thought we were the better team. They scored three and we got one but I thought we totally outplayed them. We know what their strengths are, we know what they were all about but the second and third goals were a joke on our part.’
