Premier League referee Michael Oliver will be the man in the middle for this Sunday’s Steel City derby clash between Wednesday and United at Bramall Lane.

The Football League announced its official appointments today and Oliver, who regularly takes control of top-flight matches, will be the man to control what’s set to be a feisty first Sheffield derby match of the season.

Oliver, from Northumberland, who promoted to the Select Group of Referees in 2010 and later that year became the youngest-ever Premier League referee.

But he’s caught the headlines for all the wrong reasons so far this season, being the man in charge when Aston Villa were awarded a controversial penalty in their 1-1 draw at QPR earlier this term. Armand Traore was adjudged to have pulled the shirt of Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, a decision which angered R’s boss Neil Warnock at the time.

Simon Long and Simon Barrow will assist him, while Neil Swarbrick will be the fourth official.
