On Sunday, Sheffield Wednesday won 2-1 away to Bristol City and Massimo Luongo delivered one of his best performances since his move to Hillsborough. The 27-year-old has struggled with injuries in his debut season, but he’s often impressed when fit and proved his worth over the weekend. Luongo even got on the scoresheet, so he’s enjoying a great return to the first-team.
What a class player

A lot of talk about our bad run coinciding with Fletcher being out, but I think Luongo missing for long spells was just as important. If I was a Bristol fan today I would be steaming, Mass was brilliantly niggly breaking up attacks. Clever, clever footballer. Love him #swfc

Massimo Luongo started 20 league games for #swfc 12 wins 4 draws, 4 losses. Key player this lad! 👏

Knowing we got Massimo Luongo for £1m makes me very happy. Top championship player, one of the best tacklers in the league. And a midfielder we’ve needed for so very long #swfc pic.twitter.com/DTNwUrGwqE

Against City, Luongo played for 75 minutes, had 42 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 69.7% of his 33 passes, created one chance, had two shots with one hitting the back of the net, made one clearance, gave away three fouls, made two tackles and won one free-kick.
The Australian international joined Wednesday from Queens Park Rangers for just shy of £1m in 2019 and has gone on to make 23 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals. He’s only amassed 979 minutes of Championship football under Garry Monk due to injury problems but has shown how important he is to Wednesday when fit.
The Owls could be losing Hutchinson and possibly Kieran Lee this summer, but they may thrive keeping Barry Bannan, Massimo Luongo, Joey Pelupessy and Alex Hunt next season.
